I’m certain he would have loved to see the frightening rubble and swelling of the sky on the night he passed away. He’d have cried and turned and smiled if only he could have seen the book thief on her hands and knees, next to his decimated body. He’d have been glad to witness her kissing his dusty, bomb-hit lips.

this is more satisfying than it should be

According to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, entropy in a closed system can only stay the same or increase.
When applied to the entire universe, this means that any time you destroy something organized, that is organization you can never get back.
Think of the energy spent to make those walls of dominoes. When the first wall was tapped, that energy was released. It’s now gone forever. ‘Work’ energy - the energy it took to organize that system, work that the system stored as potential energy - was released as movement, force, sound, and a small amount of heat, all of which dispersed almost instantly and became something we can never recapture.
And while it probably took hours to harness that energy into organization, it only took a second to disperse it into entropy. This is a gif of how the universe ends.
